Review: The Frenzy

The Frenzy
Francesca Lia Block
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: September 28, 2010
Number of Pages: 272

Love is a werewolf, influenced by the moon and terror, and always about to change. Liv has a secret. Something happened to her when she was thirteen. Something that changed everything. Liv knows she doesn't belong anymore-not in her own skin, not in her family . . . not anywhere. The only time she truly feels like herself is when she's with her boyfriend, Corey, and in the woods that surround her town. But in the woods, a mysterious woman watches Liv. In the woods, a pack of wild boys lurks. In the woods, Liv learns about the curse that will haunt her forever. The curse that caused the frenzy four years ago. And that may cause it again, all too soon. While Corey and Liv's love binds them together, Liv's dark secret threatens to tear them apart as she struggles to understand who-or what-she really is. And by the light of the full moon, the most dangerous secrets bare their claws. . . .

The Frenzy looked interesting enough. I did not like block's book Pretty Dead for whatever reason. Fortunately, I thought The Frenzy was a lot better. I love my werewolf tales, but I've seen them done a lot better than this.

Liv bothered me a little. She was incredibly selfish through the book. Sometimes I could understand it because of what she was going through, but other times it was just too much. For instance, she ignored her best friend Pace when he needed her and look how that turned out. But the way Liv acted was realistic, considering all that was going on with her. Also, I really liked how her wolf traits showed through even when she was human.

I'm not really a fan of Block's writing. I didn't like it in her other book or in Th Frenzy. It was too choppy. I also felt the ending was too abrupt. It felt like the author wanted to put something drastic so she just threw in a bunch of stuff in there. Other than it being  too fast, I liked the ending, considering. Some terrible things happened but in the ends Liv ended up okay.

If you're a big werewolf fan or liked Block's other books, I would check The Frenzy out. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I possibly could have.

  1. I didn't like this one very much. :/ I'm not a fan of Block's writing as well. It's too simplistic but in a way that it does too much telling and not enough showing possibly why I felt so disconnected from all the characters.

  2. I just read this one too. Block's writing style is different from any other author I've read, but for some reason it doesn't bother me too much. I guess because I expect it, I accept it. I really enjoyed this review as well as others here on your blog. I'm a new follower.
